ATTFIELD Arthur Edward of 57 Redfern Road Heartsease Estate Norwich died 22 November 1965 at The Grove Catton Grove Road Norwich. Probate Norwich 4 March 1966 to Edward Harry Attfield lorry driver and Jack Victor Attfield motor fitter. £670.
No. 7157 Sergeant E.A. ATTFIELD 20th Hussars, a Norwich man, received the M.M. for a gallant deed during the German rush in the spring of 1918.
The extract recording his action stated that in the attack on *Hourges Wood (*Note, actually The famous Battle of Rifle Wood) on April 1st, 1918, he was in command of the Hotchkiss gun section. After losing two complete gun teams, he took the gun and inflicted heavy casualties on the enemy. He put two German machine guns out of action, helped to clear the wood, and advancing to an exposed position, helped to hold the enemy back until reinforcements arrived.
This action took place near Amiens against a background of desperate struggle during the early days of the German Spring Offensive.
That these two WW1 members of the Attfield family survived for the whole of the Great War is a major miracle as they both fought through many of the most fierce and famous battles and actions from August 1914 until November 1918.
