Note on Husband: William Attfield

This William Attfield is an enigma. He married in 1837 Jane Adams, the elder of two sisters, while the younger sister Eliza married another William Attfield in 1839. Eliza's husband ("William Attfield junior" on his marriage certificate) is unquestionably the son of William Attfield and Martha Barnett, as shown in this tree, and the two Williams were evidently well acquainted because William Attfield and Eliza Adams were the witnesses at William and Jane's wedding.

William is described on his marriage certificate as an "engineer", and his father is also named as "William Attfield, engineer", but it is not known who such a person might be. William has also not been traced in the 1841 or 1851 censuses, and later census entries offer no further clues.

A possibility is that William was adopted by the Attfield family and took on the surname, even though there was already another William in the family. But this is only speculation.
